The Humanitarian Toolbox!
On the .NET Rocks! Visual Studio 2012 Road Trip stop in Chicago, Carl and Richard sat down with Tony Surma of Microsoft to talk about disaster relief. During the discussion Tony announces a new initative being supported by Microsoft called the Humanitarian Toolbox. The goal of the Humanitarian Toolbox is to improve the response capabilities of lead disaster response organizations by creating a toolbox of software that can be stood up quickly when needed. Want to help save the world with software? Contribute!

Tony Surma
Tony Surma is the CTO of Microsoft’s Disaster Response program which is responsible for the deployment of technologies to enable response organizations’ critical relief efforts and connect communities affected by natural disasters throughout the world. Previously, Tony was the National Director for the Microsoft Technology Centers where he, 10 years prior, was one of the original Technical Architects in the Chicago MTC. Prior to that he led software teams through the pain and pleasure of building large-scale systems with C/C++, COM+, ASP, Delphi, and eventually .NET for many organizations from large enterprises to dotcom startups seemingly focused on spending funding. He now spends nearly equal amounts of time in PowerPoint and Visual Studio at work and is always looking forward to volunteering his free time to help local non-profits leverage angle brackets, semi-colons and command line switches.
